What 'smart board sizes' actually means: diagonal, visible area, and physical footprint

Smart board sizes? They're quoted as the diagonal of the active display area. Not the bezel. Not the outer chassis. Our interactive flat panels use a 16:9 aspect ratio, so width and height scale predictably from that diagonal. But the physical dimensions are larger than the visible area, and they vary by model. Always check the drawing before you commit wall space.

We list the MT9679 Android 14 interactive flat panel in 65", 75", 85", 86" and 98". That's the range we actually supply. You'll also see larger non-interactive displays in our digital signage range, up to 110". Those aren't touch panels. Don't confuse the two.

When an integrator asks "what size smart board" they usually mean the diagonal. But the mounting footprint matters more. A 98" panel is wide enough to dominate a small room. And the bracket depth plus airflow clearance can push the screen further off the wall than you expect.

Room type first: huddle room, classroom, or lecture hall

Start with the room. Not the spec sheet. A huddle room for two to six people typically needs a 65" or 75" panel. A classroom with twenty to forty students usually needs 75" or 86". A lecture hall with fifty or more seats needs 86" or larger, often paired with additional displays or repeater screens.

The back row decides. A screen that looks huge from the front row can be unreadable from the back. If the furthest viewer can't make out the text, the size is wrong no matter how good the panel looks.

Viewing distance and text height: the back row decides

The distance from the screen to the back row sets the minimum text height. Therefore, it sets the screen size. We don't publish a simple distance-to-size rule because it doesn't exist. The right calculation depends on the content and the viewer's task.

ANSI/INFOCOMM V202.01:2016 defines two viewing needs: basic decision making and analytical decision making. For basic decision making, the standard gives minimum element height percentages relative to screen height at different viewing ratios. For example, if the viewing ratio is between 1.50 and 2.00, the minimum element height should be at least 1.00% of the screen height. At a viewing ratio between 3.00 and 4.00, it's 2.00%. Here's the practical method. Measure the distance from the screen to the back row. Decide whether the content is basic or analytical. Look up the minimum element height percentage. Multiply that percentage by the screen height to get the minimum text height in millimetres. Then check the text height your content actually uses. If the back row can't read the smallest text, go up a size.

We never state a distance rule from memory. The standard is the authority. Cite it in your own proposals.

Ceiling height, wall space, and bracket depth

Before you pick a size, measure the wall. A 98" panel is roughly as wide as a two-person sofa. And as high as a kitchen counter. But the exact dimensions vary by model, and we don't publish physical dimensions in our catalogue. Ask us for the drawing for the specific model.

Check the ceiling height if you're using a floor stand or a tall mount. The panel needs clearance above and below for ventilation and cable access. Wall-mounted panels need bracket depth plus airflow clearance behind the panel. Don't mount a large panel flush against a wall without checking the heat dissipation requirements.

Our interactive flat panels use standard VESA mounting patterns. But we don't list the exact pattern in the catalogue. Confirm the pattern and bracket compatibility before you order.

Delivery path: doorways, lifts, and corridors

A 98" panel in a box is a big object. Measure the narrowest point on the delivery path: doorways, corridors, lift entrances, stairwells. Include the packaging dimensions, not just the panel dimensions. The box adds several centimetres on each side.

Check the lift weight capacity and internal height. A 98" panel in a crate can be too tall for a standard lift. If the lift is too small, you'll need a stair climb or a crane. That changes the cost and schedule.

Plan for a two-person lift or a mechanical aid for large panels. A 98" panel is heavy and awkward. Don't let one person try to move it.

We can't give you our packaging dimensions or panel weight because they're not in our published spec tables. Ask any supplier for the packaged dimensions and weight before you commit to a delivery route.

Size rows we actually supply: 65" to 98" interactive panels

The MT9679 model is available in 65", 75", 85", 86", and 98". We don't make a 55" interactive flat panel. If you need a 55" touch screen, look at our self-service kiosks or digital signage options. But they're not interactive flat panels in the classroom sense.

• Measure room depth from screen wall to back row.
• Measure wall width and ceiling height at the mounting location.
• Check the delivery path: doorways, corridors, lift dimensions and weight capacity.
• Confirm the VESA pattern and bracket depth for the chosen panel.
• Calculate minimum text height using ANSI/INFOCOMM V202.01:2016 tables.
• Decide if the content is basic or analytical decision making.
• Verify the panel's physical dimensions from the supplier's drawing.
